book club :: the mountain between us | discussion questions (chapters 40 - 51)
I read The Mountain Between Us this month. :) Every Wednesday in April, I listed a couple of discussion questions about the chapters we were supposed to have read. We were supposed to have read about 13 chapters a week. You can, of course, read at your pace and look over the discussion questions when you're ready.
  1. What was Rachel right about? (ch. 41)
  2. What do you think about Rachel's decision to risk her life for the twins?
  3. How did you like the end? If you could change anything about it, what would you change?
Feel free to answer any or all questions in the comments. You can also ask your own questions or bring up another topic/discussion starter. I will be commenting, as well, and replying to all comments left. (If you leave a comment at a later time- when you've gotten around to reading this section- I will still reply to your comment within the comments section. Again, feel free to go at your own pace).

  1. 1. What was Rachel right about? In Chapter 40 we read about Ben and the episode with him seeing the mama deer protect her baby at all reminded him of Rachel and the twins. Up until this point Ben felt that Rachel did the selfish thing...after seeing the mama deer and her baby it all clicked and made sense to him.

    2. Rachel died a hero...she laid her life down for her babies.

    3. The ending...I was happy that Ben and Ashley got together. I would change the whole scene with the house that held Rachel and the twins. That just seemed too much...Ben could have visited them at a cemetery and it wouldn't have left me with the feeling that Ben really needs therapy and maybe Ashley should run...yikes!!!

    1. 1. Right about choosing to risk her life for the twins? Hm... In chapter 40 he also says that he didn't regret killing the moose. I thought that him saying that didn't make sense and seemed unsympathetic and maybe like he still disagreed with Rachel's choice.

      2. I was frustrated by Rachel's choice. I don't know that I would've done anything differently, but I would have liked to see her struggle a little. "I don't know what to do! I don't want to die, but I love my babies!" It seemed like she had the stone-cold resolve to do what she did.

      3. The mausoleum thing... yeah. I think that it was meant to be romantic and to show devotion, but I did think it came across more creepy than romantic. I was loyal to Ashley from the very beginning... just because I was introduced to her first, but I didn't really see that deep of a connection between Ben and Ashley. I would have liked more details. We didn't find out until the end that she was listening to the "romantic" (??) recorder messages from Ben to Rachel and I would've liked to know that when it was happening. The romance was too muted for me.
