greek yogurt 52 ways: the health benefits of greek yogurt
I started my Greek yogurt 52 ways project and mentioned that eating healthier desserts is part of the point of this project for me. (I have quite the sweet tooth). I didn't mention why I chose Greek yogurt though, and thought I'd share what makes Greek yogurt a worthwhile staple in my diet (and in your diet!).
Greek yogurt's health benefits include that it is a good source of calcium, it aids in digestion due to its probiotics, it regulates blood pressure, it is low in sodium, and it is good for bone health. The following are the 3 main health benefits (for me) and the reasons I decided to make Greek yogurt a regular staple in my diet:
Greek yogurt is high in protein
Reporters for U.S. News say, "A typical 6-ounce serving contains 15 to 20 grams, the amount in 2 to 3 ounces of lean meat." (Hello!) Because of Greek yogurt's high protein content, it satiates hunger.
Greek yogurt is helpful for weight maintenance and weight loss
Protein satisfies hunger because the body takes longer to digest it. Therefore, Greek yogurt helps limit caloric intake. Obviously, the less hungry I am, the less I eat.
Greek yogurt is a good workout recovery snack
Again, Greek yogurt is high in protein, which "can repair damage done by exercise" according to David Heitz for Healthline. In that same article, Heitz emphasizes that "protein is essential for good health. It is vital to cell growth, building muscle, and repairing tissue."
I've been a regular eater of non healthy desserts, and decided that I would change my mindset this year. I don't have to completely eliminate dessert to reach my weight loss goals. I have to incorporate healthy ones. Greek yogurt is helping me do that.
